Camera Movements

panning: lateral movements made with the camera fixed in one spot (left to right, right to left)

whip panning: quick panning

tracking: moving the entire camera to the left or right (usually using a track or dolly)

tilting: moving the camera lens up or down while keeping the camera's horizontal axis constant

pedestal: moving the camera up or down without changing its horizontal or vertical axis (no tilting)

pushing in: pushing the camera closer to the subject (no lens zooming involved)

pulling out: pulling the camera away from the subject

zooming: changing the focal length of the lens to make the subject appear closer or further away within the frame (without moving the camera)

crash zoom: a fast zoom, used for dramatic effect

dolly zoom: dollying closer to a subject while zooming out (to create a vertigo effect) or dollying away from a subject while zooming in

tracking: moving the camera to follow the subject’s movement, often used to follow someone walking, etc.

trucking: moving the camera left or right to follow action as it moves through a scene

arc shot: moving the camera around a subject while keeping the focus on it/them

boom shot: moving the camera up or down using a jib or crane

reframing: changing the camera angle to create a new composition or frame without having to cut
