slate: a rectangular board and clapstick that produces a sharp sound (used for capturing and organizing sound during production, making the job of the editor easier when syncing picture and sound in post)

VO (voice over): narration added in post

dialogue: conversation/words spoken by characters on camera

diegetic sound/music: the sound/music that is present and/or captured during the recording of the video (meant to be part of the story and is heard by the actors)

non-diegetic sound/music: music added in for the benefit of the viewer (often used to enhance the tone of a scene, not meant to actually exist in the world of the characters)

lavalier microphone (or lav mic): a small clip-on microphone that attaches to the subject's clothing

boom microphones: long, directional microphones (they are normally attached to boom poles to capture dialogue in a scene, but they can also be mounted directly on cameras)

room tone: also called ambience) the sound in a room that is intentionally recorded by itself and later intercut with dialogue to smooth out any rough or jarring editing points

foley: the art of reproducing and creating sounds for film

Where to find sound & music online…

Envato Elements is $16/mo, but they do offer a student discount of 30%: https://elements.envato.com/pricing/students

They also offer a free account with limited downloads, but you might think it’s worth paying to have a student account once you see all the different types of downloads & templates they offer.

Epidemic Sound has quality royalty free music created by actual musicians: https://www.epidemicsound.com/

They also have sound effects. It’s only $15/mo, and you only have to have a subscription for as long as you are publishing videos. Once you’re done uploading to Vimeo, you can cancel your subscription and keep your videos up.

Storyblocks seems very similar to ES (and is the same price), but I’ve never personally used it: https://www.storyblocks.com/

99 Sounds is free: https://99sounds.org/

Soundfield has a few free sounds that might be useful: https://library.soundfield.com/

I’ll keep adding to this list as I find more resources.
